Welcome to the West Alabama Quilters Guild website!
We are an exciting group of individuals who cherish the artistry, heritage and technical aspects of quilting. Our guild has been in existence since 1991 and draws membership from as far away as one hundred miles. We welcome members from all walks of life, from individuals new to sewing and national award winners; our only requirement is a love of quilting.
Our general meetings are on the second Saturday of each month, starting with the beginner’s class at 8:45 a.m. Guild members demonstrate a variety of techniques, methods, and shortcuts for new and seasoned quilters. The business meeting follows at 9:30 and includes a monthly program; Bring-n-Brag demonstrations, and refreshments.
The benefits of guild membership include access to an extensive library of books, tapes and patterns for all quilting interests; quilting retreats twice a year; one major workshop featuring a nationally known quilter; several mini-workshops focusing on elements of quilting; plus a wealth of local expertise!
At the Kentuck Festival of the Arts, held annually in Northport the third weekend of the October, we demonstrate the art of quilting and encourage children to participate in a quilting activity. Visitors to our booth can purchase quilted items our guild has made as well as a ticket for our annual Opportunity Quilt. You might just be this year’s winner!
Every other year the West Alabama Quilters Guild sponsors a major quilt show featuring not only renowned quilt artists but over 200 quilts we ourselves have made. It is also a good time to shop for needed quilting items! Part of our mission is to be a service organization to our community. Our guild members find time to make quilts for veterans, cancer prevention programs, child abuse victims, and the Ronald McDonald House. A typical year finds us visiting area elementary schools and libraries sharing our quilting heritage with future quilters.
Waiting for you are friendly faces, welcoming handshakes and lots of quilting fun. Won’t you join us?
