Community Outreach and Service

As part of our mission, members of the WAQG are actively engaged in a number of outreach and community service projects. These projects focus on education and assistance. Quilt education focuses on informing the residence of West Alabama about the history, love of and techniques of quilting. Assistance occurs through members donating their time and fabric in the construction of quilts to be given to organizations to assist them in their program. These quilts have been given to Ronald McDonald house and other organizations throughout West Alabama.

Charity Quilt-Off for April to August

The primary focus for our quilt-making this year is “Comfort Quilts” for adult patients undergoing chemotherapy at the DCH Cancer Treatment Center. We want to provide a shoulder bag for each comfort quilt as the patient will carry his or her quilt back and forth from home for treatments. 40 to 50 patients are treated each day and there are equal numbers of men and women. The patients sit in a recliner while they receive chemotherapy, so the size of the quilts is important – bigger is NOT better. It is also important that the quilts be light-weight, such as a pieced top with a flannel or light fleece backing but no batting; or a cotton backing and light batting.

Instructions for making a shoulder bag are offered in the newsletter and at guild meetings but this style is not required.

There is also the option of making smaller quilts for Ronald McDonald House in Birmingham.
